Beta Club Inducts New Members and Installs New Officers

On Wednesday, September 15, 2009, the Valley Junior High School Beta Club inducted new members. Officers were also installed in the ceremony. New officers for the 2009-2010 school year are as follows: President -Allie Bradford, Vice President - Seth Wilson, Secretary - Case Key, Treasurer - Brittany Davenport, Reporter -Hali Hogland, Chaplain - Alec Wasserman.
The Beta Club is working on various projects to get ready for the State Convention to be held in Mobile, Alabama, this year in February 2010. This is the first year the state convention has been moved from Montgomery to Mobile. This move will mean an extra night's stay for the Valley Beta Club, which means extra expense. Beta sponsors Stephanie Homan and Kim Norris ask students to support their Beta fundraisers so that every Beta student who wants to attend the state convention will be able to do so.
SGA Collects Boxtops for Education

The SGA is working with the PTO to collect Boxtops for Education to help raise funds for necessary expenses of the school which remain underfunded due to proration. As of Friday, September 25th, the SGA had collected over 1,270 boxtops (which amounts to about $127 for the school with boxtops being worth 10 cents each). "This shows how a little effort from everyone can really help out our school.," said SGA sponsor Mrs. Weeks. The SGA collects the boxtops from homerooms each Friday, and they will continue this project all year long.

Volleyball

Go Bucs! Our seventh and eighth grade volleyball girls have worked very hard this year. They have won and lost games, but they will pull through. Principal Tommy Kacharos said, "Our girls have played several really great games and lost games they probably shouldn't have, but here at Valley as long as you give 100%, we will take pride in any sport you play." On September 29th, the seventh graders defeated Lupton 25 to 22 and are poised to play for the county championship.

The Valley Bucaneers Head Coach John Nix has been working very hard during this basketball season. He has selected his teams for the 7th and 8th grade to have another tremendous basketball season this year. We have been practicing very hard for our first game that has been scheduled to be on the 12th of October against Bankhead. Coach John Nix has told us to play hard, "You have to give it 100%." We really want to thank our principal Tommy Kacharos for letting us have a basketball team. The whole team has been practicing and hoping to see you all there to support the VALLEY JR. HIGH SCHOOL BUCANEERS BASKETBALL TEAM!!!! Go Bucs!!

Movies: The movies that are in theaters now (or coming soon) are as follows: Halloween ll, About Steve, 9, Carriers, Amreeka, Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Fame, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.
Music: The latest songs that are on everyone's MP3 player are as follows: "Fireflies"-Owl City, "Battlefield"-Jordin Sparks, "You Belong With Me"-Taylor Swift, "Good Girls Go Bad"- Cobra Starship, "Break Up"-Mario, "Stay"-SafetySuit. The upcoming c.d.'s are as follows: Trey Songz-Ready, Brooks and Dunn-#1's and Then Some, Jay-Z-Blueprint, Muse-The Resistance, Drake- So Far Gone, Sean "Diddy" Combs-Last Train To Paris, 3 Days Grace- Life Starts Now, Alice In Chains-Black Gives Way To Blue. The rising stars are also as follows: Drake, Jordin Sparks, Mario, Colbie Callat, Jeremih, Pleasure P, Chevelle, Shakira, and Keri Hilson.
Books: The books that you will see almost everyone walking around with at VJHS are Stephanie Meyers' Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. People are so excited and looking forward to seeing New Moon in theaters on November 20th, 2009.

What is the most interesting new vocabulary word you have learned lately?
How do you connect this word to what you already know?
8th Grade Responses:
The most interesting vocabulary word I've learned so far this year is grandiloquent which means "using big words in order to impress someone." I found it interesting because I've heard a lot of people, especially politicians, doing this, and I never knew, until now, what it was called. ( by Mason McCain)
The most interesting word for me was procrastinate. Procrastinate means "to put off until a later time. " This word is interesting to me because I usually procrastinate. (by Drew Wolf)
7th Grade Responses:
The most interesting vocabulary word that I have learned, by far, has to be the word aloof. This word is just awesome! It's fun to say (ah-loof'), and its definition describes me on a number of things--"distant in interest." (by Ben Ferguson)
My word is crooned, and it means "to sing softly." When I first heard it, I thought it had something to do with a bird. I think it is the most interesting because the sound of the word makes me think of a bird and its meaning has to do with singing. (by Amanda Schofield)
So far, the most interesting word I have learned in vocabulary is the word delve which means to dig deeply or to search for information. I think of it like searching for something on Google. I think it is interesting because it doesn't really sound like an actual word. (by Josh Stinnett)
Benevolent means "one who does good or wants to do good." To me, it means being kind or beneficial to others; trying to do your best. That's how I am. (by Casey Tidwell)
The most interesting vocabulary word I have learned this year is bamboozled, which means " confused through trickery." It is my favorite new word because it sounds funny, and because most of the time I am confused. (by Christa Wright)
My favorite vocabulary word is chatter because, one, I like to talk a lot, and, two, you can use the word chatter in a lot of different sentences instead of those old, boring words you hear every day like said and told. (by Hollie Light)

6th Grade Responses:
My favorite vocabulary word is astronomer. Astronomer is an "expert in the science that deals with the sun, moon, planets, stars, and galaxies." This is the most interesting word because I enjoy science and learming about the studies of it. (by Savannah Madison)
My favorite vocabulary word since this school year started is charity. The exact meaning of charity is "fund or organization for helping the sick, poor, or helpless, or the environment." My belief about this word is that if you are able to provide help to anyone who needs it by giving clothes, baking for them, or other ways, you should. (by Ansley Goodson)
The most interesting vocabulary word I have learned so far this year is collapse. It means "to cave in." I think collapse is interesting because you hear it very often in news articles. (by Allison Rogers)
So far this year I've learned many words. The one I've found most interesting is materialize. The meaning of materialize is "to take form; emerge." "The reason I chose this word is because that's not what I thought it would mean. (by Hannah Capps)

The vocabulary word that I have found most interesting is hurricane. The meaning of this word is "a tropical storm that reaches 74 to 80 mph." My meaning of this word is "cool ocean water that rises in the air." Hurricanes are interesting because the different ways they are formed. (by Austin Veal)

5th Grade Responses:
My most interesting vocabulary word that I've learned so far is refugee. Refugees are people who flee to another country for safety. My interpretation of refugees is "people who move to save their lives." It's most interesting to me because I learned that there are other people who need safety too. (by Kristan Swindle)
My favorite word so far this year is migrant. It means "people who move from place to place from different regions." I thought it meant people who move and then stay. I think it is most interesting because it explains some people's lifestyle. (by Cody Williams)
Confidence--a firm belief in yourself; self confidence. He had confidence in himself when the crowds started cheering for him. (by William Hyde)
Challenge--an offer to test ability or skill. I enjoy basketball because one team will challenge the other team to see which team can get the most points. (by Mavrick Williams)

Sinew--A tendon or muscle. I never heard of it and it sounded interesting to me. (Corine Smith)
Disrespect--because you should never disrespect your teacher, parents or other adults. You should always respect them all.(by Caleb Headrick)
